Lusail City Development Location : Doha, Qatar Project type : Urban development, infrastructure Project size : Area of 37 km² In Qatar, HOCHTIEF ViCon is involved in one of the world’s largest urban development projects: the creation of Lusail City, an artificial city which will be home to 200,000 people. Lusail City will evolve on desert sand on the gulf coast, to the north of Qatar’s capital, Doha. It will span approximately 37 square kilometers and comprise ten urban quarters, including residential areas, shopping streets, recreational facilities, schools, medical centers and two harbors. A project of this size means substantial challenges for all parties involved as they plan and coordinate the construction process. Lusail introduced Building Information Modeling at an early project stage to enhance planning and communication and minimize disruptions in the construction process. A 3D computer model of the city’s infrastructure, including its main supply pipes, was used on a regular basis as the project was planned and coordinated. HOCHTIEF ViCon supported Lusail in this process. Initially, ViCon identified to what extent virtual construction could be applied in the Lusail planning and construction phase. Which software and which hardware were required? What kinds of contracts must be concluded with the companies involved, to make sure that the client has access to all the necessary data at the right time? ViCon has been supporting the Lusail team throughout the project, making sure that BIM is used in the most efficient manner. This includes regular BIM training sessions for everyone involved. Once an overall process had been established for the use of data collected, ViCon created a 3D model of the city’s entire infrastructure. It was developed using more than 10,000 2D drawings from more than 20 specialist planners, which included more than 100km of streets and motorways, 60km of sewage drains and 160km of rain water pipes. The digital 3D model constituted a uniform database to which all project members had access. All the individual planning stages were integrated in one 3D model, making it possible to bundle and coordinate all individual plans in a straightforward manner. This meant that geometrical clashes between trades could be identified in the early stages. The model also served as a basis for photo-realistic visualizations and video animations of Lusail. With these, it is possible to imagine what the buildings will look like and how they will work, which is an excellent basis for marketing and PR activities. In 2008, Design Zone Qatar set out to find out what design could do to improve everyday life in Qatar. In INFRASTRUCTURE, students of Qatar University talk about their experience with the infrastructure in Qatar. They find that there is nearly no public transportation in the country and that public transport - by electric carts, or by boat along the coast - would be needed.

The New Port, located on the outskirts of Doha, will be a vital component in Qatar’s economic infrastructure. But the main challenge is to overcome the harsh climatic and geological conditions that make work difficult in this region. Keeping in mind the project’s tight schedule and the shipping and assembly requirements for the excavators, Gulf Earth Moving has chosen the Hitachi EX1900–6 to help excavate more than 30 million cubic meters of sand and limestone from the site.

(3 Apr 2017) Qatar said on Monday it plans to boost production from a vast underwater natural gas field by 10 percent, giving the energy-rich Gulf nation potential new revenue as it pursues ambitious infrastructure plans. State-run Qatar Petroleum (QP) said a new gas project on the southern portion of the North Field would give the 2022 World Cup host capacity to export some additional 2 billion (B) cubic feet of gas per day. Current production from the field is around 21 billion (B) cubic feet daily, according to QP President and CEO Saad Sherida al-Kaabi. Qatar is a small but wealthy member of OPEC that generates most of its income from natural gas rather than crude oil. It exports the gas by chilling it to a liquefied form that can be shipped on tankers to customers around the world. It shares control of the North Field with Iran, which lies on the other side of the Persian Gulf. The new Qatari developments are at the southern end of the gas field – far from Iran's jurisdiction, al-Kaabi told the Associated Press in an interview. He said that relations between Qatar and Iran remained strong, especially when it came to cooperating on production in the North Field. Al-Kaabi also said he was hopeful about the relationship going forward been Qatar and the US, especially considering the close ties between Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, former CEO and chairman of Exxon Mobile. Exxon Mobile helped developing the small Arabian peninsula's substantial gas reserves over the past two decades, launching the country to the top of the chain of natural gas producers. Qatar is in the midst of a massive building boom as it prepares to host soccer's biggest tournament in five years' time. Its finance minister told reporters in February that the country is spending nearly half a billion (B) dollars each week preparing for the games. Korea and Qatar have agreed to jointly pursue a coal thermal power plant construction project in southern Turkey. Following a meeting between President Park Geun-hye and Qatari Emir... Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Wednesday,... Seoul and Doha signed an MOU to take part in the 14 billion dollar plant construction project. By combining Korea′s advanced technology with Qatar′s experienced capital management, the two sides are seeking to win similar infrastructure construction bids in third countries. President Park then sought Doha′s support for Korean firms to win orders ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. She also promoted Korea′s Northeast Asian oil hub initiative, and then asked Qatar and other oil-producing countries to participate.

Migrant workers building the first stadium for Qatar's 2022 World Cup have been earning as little as 45p an hour, the Guardian can reveal. Subscribe to The Guardianhttp://bit.ly/subscribegdn The pay rate appears to be in breach of the tournament organisers' own worker welfare rules and comes despite the Gulf kingdom spending £134bn on infrastructure ahead of the competition. World Cup Slaves ► http://is.gd/qatarworkers More than 100 workers from some of the world's poorest countries are labouring in ferocious desert heat on the 40,000-seat al-Wakrah stadium, which has been designed by the British architect Zaha Hadid and is due to host a quarter-final. Qatar's unpaid World Cup workers ► http://is.gd/qatar2022unpaid Pay slips show they are toiling up to 30 days a month for as little as £4.90 a day. The rates are among the lowest the Guardian found during a week-long investigation into conditions for migrant labourers across Qatar's construction industry, and come despite pledges by the tournament's organisers to make workers' rights "our top priority".
